I've been thinking of doing more writing myself, though I've had no such serendipitous encounters with college acquaintances running publishing houses. Being the procrastinator that I am, I've been listening to a lot of podcasts ABOUT writing, without doing a whole lot of actual writing. The thing is, all of these podcasts that interview writers say that you just have to do it. Most of them say something like, "Every day, set aside some time to write. Ideally you'd make it the same time every day so that it becomes a habit." So, my advice from listening to others and having no real-world experience myself, is that you write some things. Find some music, maybe even old stuff, and try to write a review or at least part of a review for an hour of half-hour every day, just to be in the habit of daily writing so that when the assignment comes, it will feel more natural. I was unclear whether you meant you'd be writing music reviews or something more like editorial articles, but I figured practice is practice. Anyway, my two cents. May God bless you and use you in this. Congratulations!

Re: nerves

Do you really think you're stomach is turning? Perhaps it's the one staying stationary and the rests of you is turning. Get it checked out. On the other hand, writing is good.
